The World of Karl Marx

What Marx said about "workers of all lands" is well known. What else did he say? Let us go to his grave at the Highgate Cemetery in London.

What Karl Marx said about philosophers is more interesting. His gravestone says

"The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point however is to change it."

If Marx was talking about himself as the philosopher and Vladimir Lenin as the person who would change the world, he was wrong. Lenin admitted that he could change the form of government, but could not change the people.

If Marx was talking about Kant (philosopher) and Einstein (to change the world), he was right! Click here for Einstein's philosophical base.

Marx wrote about the philosophers in German. Let us see how the German version reads.

Die Philosophen haben die Welt nur verschieden interpretiert; es kommt aber darauf an, sie zu veraendern. (*)

In English: Philosophers only have interpreted this world in various ways, but the important thing is to change the world. (translated Heinrich Schulz, German Philosopher, July 2006).

(*) Karl Marx says this on a marble plate at the entrance to the main building of Humboldt University in Berlin. Photo by Y. S. Kim (February 2006). Here is a photo of himself in front of the plate. Earlier in 1998, he went there with his film camera to produce this old version.

While he was there in 1998, he was happy to see a statue of Hermann von Helmholtz standing in front of the main building. Here is a photo of himself standing next to the base of the statue. Helmholtz formulated the Conservation of Energy.
